Running While on Holiday

Here I am in Tenerife, and I wanted to share some thoughts about running holidays.

I sometimes get runners who say, “I wonder if I should take my running trainers?” Other people choose to take a complete break from running, and some people go away specifically to run.

We are here in Tenerife in the week leading up to Christmas, and we are back on Christmas Eve for some festivities.

Mixing Running and Walking

This morning we did a beautiful six-mile run with myself, my wife, and my mother-in-law on some stunning, fairly flat, drivable roads.

Then we have just been on a four-mile walk with the family. Becky stayed with her mum and dad, and I came down a six-mile, quite technical descent.

What I am trying to say is that there is a little bit of something for everybody in places like this.

Great Walking Usually Means Great Running

Anywhere that has good walking trails generally has good running trails too.

Places like Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Madeira, Italy, Corsica and Sardinia. All of these tourist destinations are fantastic options.

You can grab yourself a cheap flight and an Airbnb. We have hired a car and done a super cheap holiday.

A Holiday That Fits Around Life

It is a family occasion. We will walk, we will run, we will eat, we will drink, and we will explore around.

It is just something to think about if you fancy a bit of winter sun, or a bit of adventure at any time of the year, like a summer trip to the Alps.

Anywhere that is good for walking is good for running.

Final Thoughts

I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a great New Year. If you have got any questions about running while you are on holiday, or about going on running holidays, just leave them in the comments below.

For now, happy running.
