Running with your Dog

Hi there, Team We Run! Coach Alexa here, along with my able assistant Jam. Trying to film anything with dogs and children around – well, that’s a challenge in itself!

Today, I’m going to talk about the benefits of running with your dog. Here is the dog in question… except she’s just laid down on the floor, which is helpful – now you can’t see her on the camera at all! Let’s see if I can get her in frame. Yep, lunatic dog down here.

The Benefits of Running with Your Dog

Running with your dog really strengthens your bond. It also helps channel the energy of a high-energy dog, particularly those that are prey-driven or reactive. It’s an excellent way to focus their energy while deepening your connection.

Most dogs can start running with you between one year and 18 months old, depending on their size and skeletal maturity. Larger dogs take longer to finish growing, so it’s always best to consult a vet before beginning a running routine.

Essential Gear for Running with Your Dog

1. A Proper Harness

Using a proper harness is key when running with your dog. You don’t want any pressure on their neck since there are delicate structures there – like their windpipe and the arteries leading to their brain. A good harness ensures that the force of running is distributed safely across their shoulders, just like how Huskies pull a sled.

2. A Bungee Lead

A bungee lead is also helpful. This attaches to the dog’s harness at one end and to a waist belt on you at the other. The most important feature is the bungee section in the middle, which provides flexibility if there’s a start-stop motion. This prevents both you and your dog from getting yanked around too much.

How to Run with Your Dog

Just like humans, dogs need training to get used to running along with you. Start with a gentle introduction:

  • Use treats and positive reinforcement to encourage them to run alongside you.

  • Train with a walk-run strategy to gradually build up their endurance.

  • Teach them to differentiate between running and walking by using the harness and lead.

This type of training helps them understand when it’s time to run versus when it’s just a casual walk.

Building Your Dog’s Running Fitness Gradually

Dogs, like humans, aren’t born ready to run long distances. They need to build up fitness gradually. A walk-run strategy works well, increasing duration over time while allowing for rest days.

  • Recovery weeks are important – mixing in walking-only days prevents overtraining.

  • Adjust based on breed and size – small dogs may not go as far, and large breeds like St. Bernards might not be able to run at all.

  • Watch for overheating, especially in thick-coated breeds like Huskies.

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds, like Bulldogs, may not be suitable for running due to their limited breathing capacity.

Running with a Dog: Nutrition and Hydration Considerations

If your dog is running long distances with you, slightly increasing their food intake on running days may be necessary. However, avoid overfeeding.

  • Wait at least 2 hours after feeding before running to prevent bloating or digestive issues when out on a run.

  • Keep an eye on hydration, especially in warm weather. Dogs overheat faster than humans, even short-coated breeds.

Understanding Your Dog’s Running Preferences

Some dogs naturally adapt to your running pace over time, while others need more training.

  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage a steady, non-pulling run.

  • If your dog prefers off-lead running, find a safe, enclosed area.

  • Not all dogs enjoy running – some, like Jam, just aren’t into it!

Running with your dog can be an incredibly rewarding experience. With the right training, gear, and gradual conditioning, you and your pup can enjoy safe and fun runs together.
